Why Southwold?

People are drawn to Southwold for all sorts of reasons nowadays. Its sense of peace and tranquility, and its unspoilt, old fashioned charm are very much reminiscent of a bygone era. Southwold has become well known as a place that provides high quality, affordable holiday accommodation, and the recent boom in tourism is very much based around the self-catering, holiday cottage market. People want to leave their home comforts behind – but not all of them. Southwold caters for everybody, young and old, rich and poor, and plenty in between.

Those who first developed Southwold were ahead of their time with the building of the Grand Hotel in 1901 which stood between Pier Avenue, and Hotson Road, just opposite the pier. It was a luxury hotel that boasted 100 rooms. It was part of a drive to push Southwold as a major attraction – and it worked. The railway station which stood opposite the current Blyth Hotel brought passengers from London, and swept them down Pier Avenue to the hotel, or, they would arrive by the Belle steamer from London, and dock at the end of the pier. It was the beginning of seaside bathing using beach machines, and the subsequent birth of the “beach hut”. It was a masterpiece of planning.
Those who couldn’t afford hotel accommodation had the choice of other hostelries, boarding houses , and bed and breakfast accommodation which mushroomed up after the demolition of the hotel in 1959.

Today Southwold appeals to a cosmopolitan crowd who have perhaps had enough of the cheap European holidays ( or the Caribbean ), and want something which is simpler, safer and more comfortable for all the family and for all ages. Southwold will never have the razzamatazz of other resorts, which is what gives it a timeless appeal. Everything in town can be walked to, it is one of the safest towns in the UK, and its people are some of the friendliest you will meet anywhere.

People know simple, understated value when they see it. That is why visitor numbers to the town grow year on year, and that is why our holiday cottages and homes are increasingly in demand. That is why we are Simply Southwold. Nothing pretentious. What you see is what you get.
